Tambuli Masthead: An Evolution Story
by Dr. Manuel Pardo
April 2008

At the meeting of the Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City in January 1971, during the presidency of Dr. Arnulfo Sulit, it was decided that a newsletter be published. Volume I, Number 1 came out in February 1971 and was simply called NEWSLETTER.

The birth of the TAMBULI did not come about until March 1971, when Dr. Franklin Farrales wrote an article in that issue on why the newsletter should be called Tambuli. In it, Dr. Farrales discussed the meaning of the word Tambuli as a call to “gather the herd” so to speak. Thus, a call to unity became the rallying symbol of our young organization. A drawing of the tambuli instrument was placed by the side of the name.

However it was not until January 1984 that an “official” design was commissioned by the association and Mr. Modesto Puno, Jr., an architect by profession, was asked to do the design. The choice was a drawing of a man wearing a “salakot” hat, blowing on the instrument called a “tambuli” followed by the bamboo type lettering for the word TAMBULI. This design was submitted to and approved by the Copyright Office of the State of Kansas.

In the ensuing years, different editors and/or editorial staff experimented with different versions of the original design.
